Writing to floppy disks is very slow

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #19763. Writing to traditional (not USB) floppy disks in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring is very slow. This is due to inefficient but very safe default mounting options.

This issue can be worked around by changing the mount options. To do this, you need to edit the file /etc/fstab. For information on editing system configuration files, see this page. The file will contain a line similar to this:

none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0

The offending option is 'sync', near the end of the line. Change this to 'dirsync', for instance:

none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,dirsync 0 0

After making this change, please note that you should 'unmount' floppy disks before you remove them, in the same way as you should for other removable storage devices, by right-clicking on the icon for the disk and selecting the 'Unmount' option. Failure to do this may result in data corruption.
